Mark choked out, tears and mucus mingling: "I'm Ethan's father... We used to be a family..."
"Father?" I stepped closer, looking straight into his trembling eyes. "Four years ago on Thanksgiving night, when your father banished our disabled son to the kitchen corner, you sat there and passed the gravy boat without a word of defense. Did you remember you were a father then? When you chose silence to protect your dirty inheritance seat, you signed the death warrant of this family yourself."
Mark trembled violently, unable to speak.

"You aren't destitute because of bad luck, Mark," I continued, every word cutting deep into his conscience. "You're destitute because your nature is cowardly, ungrateful, and selfish. Don't ever show your face near my son or my home again. If you dare step foot near us, I'll secure a restraining order to throw you straight in jail."
I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving Mark collapsed on the cold concrete of the Columbus street. The final tether between my past and me was completely severed at that moment.
