Chapter 24 - Thanksgiving ReduxExactly one year to the day after the disastrous Thanksgiving dinner that changed everything, the holiday rolled around once more.

The morning sun rose crisp and clear over Columbus, casting a golden glow across our quiet suburban street. Instead of spending the day cooking a massive, stressful feast for ungrateful in-laws who looked down on my son, Ethan and I decided to create our own new tradition.

We spent the morning in the kitchen together—Ethan wearing a bright red chef’s apron, carefully stirring cranberry sauce at the counter while sitting in an adjustable rolling stool, and me roasting a golden-brown turkey with savory garlic and rosemary herbs. The rich, delicious aroma filled every corner of our home.

Later that afternoon, we didn't eat alone in a drafty kitchen. We set up a magnificent feast right in the center of the dining room table, complete with fine china, sparkling apple cider, and all our favorite dishes.

Just before we sat down to eat, Ethan looked across the table at me, his eyes shining with genuine happiness.

“Mom, can I say something?” he asked softly.

“Of course, buddy,” I smiled, resting my hands on the edge of the table.

Ethan took a deep breath, looking around the warm, beautifully decorated room before looking right into my eyes. “I just want to say... I’m thankful for you. Thank you for always protecting me, and thank you for making our home so happy.”

My throat tightened, and for a second, I couldn't find my voice. I reached across the table, taking his warm hands in mine.

“Oh, sweetheart,” I whispered, blinking back a tear of pure joy. “I am the luckiest mom in the entire world. Thank you for being my son.”

We clinked our glasses together in a cheerful toast, our laughter echoing off the walls of a home built entirely on love, resilience, and unbreakable strength.
