Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm and the Gathering of Allies

The following morning, the sun rose over Columbus, cold and bright, casting long winter shadows across our driveway.
Mark had left before dawn. True to his cowardly nature, he hadn't even attempted to wake me or say goodbye to Ethan. He had simply packed a duffel bag, grabbed his car keys, and fled back to his parents' estate, seeking shelter under the only roof where he didn't have to face the consequences of his own spinelessness.
When Ethan woke up, I sat with him at the kitchen table. We ate pancakes drowned in maple syrup, laughing and talking about his upcoming school science fair project, completely ignoring the heavy, lingering ghosts of the previous night.
By Monday morning, my life was moving forward with terrifying, beautiful velocity.
I sat across from Sarah Vance—no relation to my in-laws, thankfully—who happened to be one of the top family law and corporate asset-recovery attorneys in the Midwest. Her office on the top floor of a downtown Columbus skyscraper overlooked the freezing Scioto River.
Sarah adjusted her glasses, peering down at the thick stack of financial documents and legal files I had slid across her mahogany desk.
“Good lord, Claire,” Sarah whistled softly, leaning back in her leather executive chair. “This isn't just a messy divorce. This is a complete corporate detonation.”
“I don't want a messy divorce, Sarah,” I said calmly, sipping my black coffee. “I want a clean, absolute, and total dismantling. I want full legal and physical custody of my son, I want the house signed over to me free and clear, and I want every single asset Mark tried to hide through his father’s shell companies exposed and partitioned as marital property before the federal government seizes them.”
Sarah’s lips curved into a sharp, appreciative smile.
“Consider it done,” Sarah said, picking up a gold-plated fountain pen. “With these financial records, your husband doesn't have a leg to stand on. If he tries to fight us in court, he opens himself up to direct criminal conspiracy charges alongside his father. His best option—his only option—is to sign whatever agreement we put in front of him just to stay out of a federal penitentiary.”

“Make sure the custody agreement includes a strict morality and safety clause,” I added, my voice hardening. “If Richard Bennett ever comes within five hundred feet of my son again, Mark forfeits all visitation rights permanently.”
“Absolute zero tolerance,” Sarah confirmed, jotting down notes on her legal pad. “Leave it to me, Claire. Within forty-eight hours, your husband’s legal team will be begging us for a settlement.”
