Chapter 21 - Spring Rebirth

Spring returned to Manhattan with an explosion of cherry blossoms lining Central Park and vibrant floral arrangements brightening the windows of every high-end boutique downtown. My life was a whirlwind of joyous preparations, but this time, everything felt entirely different from my first aborted attempt at a wedding.
There were no stressful compromises to please distant relatives, no toxic family members dictating guest lists, and no underlying anxiety about whether the person standing beside me was wearing a mask.
My father had taken on the role of chief wedding planner for our intimate, elegant ceremony, which was scheduled to take place in a stunning glass conservatory botanical garden overlooking the Hudson River.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, Dad and I sat at a sidewalk café in Soho, reviewing the final floral arrangements—which proudly featured vibrant orange marigolds, deep purple asters, and golden sunflowers, mirroring the flower farm we had visited on our anniversary of survival.
Dad looked up from his clipboard, beaming with pride. "Julian called me yesterday to ask for my formal blessing again. Can you believe that? Such a traditional gentleman."
I laughed, taking a sip of my iced latte. "He knows how much you mean to me, Dad. He wouldn't dare do anything else."

"You know, sweetheart," Dad said softly, his expression turning nostalgic as he looked across the table at me. "Looking at you now, so radiant, so completely yourself... I sometimes look back at that horrible day in the Grandview Hotel stairwell and realize it was the greatest blessing in disguise. It forced us both out of comfortable illusions and into the lives we were actually meant to live."
"I agree, Dad," I smiled, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand. "We didn't just survive the storm; we grew wings."
