Chapter 60 - Shadows of Doubt Dispelled

Monday morning brought a crisp chill to the mountain air as Sandy and Julian packed their SUV to return to Manhattan. Just as they were about to pull out of the cabin’s gravel driveway, Sandy’s phone buzzed with an incoming email notification.
She glanced down at the screen. It was a formal notification from the New York State Department of Corrections regarding Michael Evans’s compassionate release hearing. The legal brief noted that the petition had been formally reviewed, evaluated by a parole board, and decisively denied due to the severity of his financial crimes, the absence of restitution, and a complete lack of verified rehabilitation.
Sandy stared at the screen for a moment, her expression entirely neutral. There was no surge of anxiety, no sense of lingering danger, and no emotional weight attached to the bureaucratic update. She simply locked her phone, placed it in the console cup holder, and looked out the windshield.
"Everything okay?" Julian asked gently, shifting the SUV into drive.

"Yes," Sandy replied, a serene smile touching her lips. "Just confirmation that some chapters are permanently sealed."
As they drove down the winding mountain road toward the highway leading back to the city, Sandy watched the golden autumn trees blur past in a brilliant streak of amber and light. She wasn't looking backward anymore. Her eyes were fixed squarely on the horizon, where an infinite expanse of bright, beautiful days waited for her.
