Chapter 51 - The Shadow of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the Tribeca penthouse, casting long, peaceful shadows across the hardwood floor. Sandy Miller-Vance stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a ceramic mug of steaming black coffee. Below her, the bustling streets of Manhattan moved in a rhythmic, relentless cadence. Five years had passed since the infamous day her wedding day had imploded in the Grandview Hotel stairwell, five years since she discovered her fiancé, Michael, and her mother, Monica, sharing an unforgivable betrayal. Yet, despite the global success of Apex Media, her flourishing international career, and her deeply fulfilling marriage to Julian, life had a subtle way of reminding her of where she started.
Her phone buzzed softly on the marble kitchen island. Sandy glanced down, expecting a notification regarding the upcoming European gallery expansion or a logistical update from her team. Instead, the screen flashed an unfamiliar, restricted extension number. Frowning slightly, she swiped to answer. "Miller-Vance Agency, this is Sandy."
"Sandy? It’s Detective Miller from the Twenty-Fourth Precinct again. I apologize for disturbing your morning."
A cold, familiar ripple of tension ran down Sandy’s spine. It had been years since the police department last contacted her regarding Michael Evans’s corporate embezzlement trial. "Detective. What is this about? I thought Michael’s federal sentencing was finalized long ago."
"It was," the detective replied evenly. "He’s currently serving his sentence upstate. However, a legal motion has been filed on his behalf for a compassionate release hearing due to declining health conditions. As part of the standard protocol for victims of his high-level fraud and related disturbances, our office is required to notify you in case you wish to submit a formal victim impact statement or an objection."
Sandy exhaled slowly, her thumb tracing the smooth rim of her coffee mug. The mention of Michael’s name no longer provoked panic or burning rage; instead, it felt like reading a faded paragraph from a book she had finished reading years ago. "Thank you for the notification, Detective. But my answer is the same as it has always been. I have no statement to make, no anger left to spare, and no desire to re-enter a chapter that ended a lifetime ago. Please process the legal requirements without my involvement."

"Understood, Ms. Miller-Vance. Have a peaceful morning."
As the line went dead, Sandy lowered the phone and looked down at her left hand. The platinum lotus ring—symbolizing resilience, rebirth, and a life forged from ashes—caught the morning light with dazzling brilliance. Julian walked into the kitchen moments later, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin gently on her shoulder. "Everything alright, my love?" he whispered, kissing her cheek. Sandy smiled, leaning back into his warm embrace. "Everything is perfect," she replied, knowing the ghosts of her past finally rested in absolute silence.
