Chapter 16 - The Engagement Celebration at the EstateWord of our engagement spread swiftly through our professional and personal circles, sparking waves of genuine joy and celebration. To mark the occasion, Margaret and Robert insisted on hosting an intimate garden engagement party at their suburban estate in late June.

The sprawling backyard was a picturesque dream of white linen tables, cascading floral arches of white roses and hydrangeas, string lights woven through the grand oak trees, and a live string quartet playing softly in the background.

Family, close colleagues, and trusted lifelong friends mingled happily with glasses of vintage champagne. As I stood on the stone patio beside Julian, wearing an elegant cream-colored lace midi dress that shimmered in the summer twilight, I felt completely at peace.

Margaret walked over, holding two crystal flutes of champagne, her face glowing with maternal pride. She handed one to me and the other to Julian.

"To the bride and groom," Margaret announced softly, her voice carrying warmth and strength. "May your foundation be unshakeable, your honesty absolute, and your love a masterpiece that withstands every test of time."

"To Emily and Julian!" Robert echoed, raising his glass as family and friends chimed in with warm applause.

As we clinked our glasses together, the clear, ringing sound echoed softly across the sunlit lawn.

Later in the evening, while Julian was speaking with his uncle Marcus by the garden fountain, Margaret pulled me aside toward a quiet bench beneath a blossoming jasmine trellis.

"You look breathtaking, Emily," Margaret said, her eyes shining with unshed tears of happiness. "Looking at you tonight, I am reminded of how a woman’s resilience can transform heartbreak into triumph."

"I couldn't have done it without your unwavering support, Margaret," I said sincerely, taking her hand. "You taught me that dignity isn't about silent endurance; it’s about standing firmly in the truth."

Margaret smiled, squeezing my hand tightly. "Daniel called his father's office last week, begging for financial assistance again. Robert didn't even take the call. He’s living in a small, rundown studio apartment on the far south side, working a low-level retail job, completely abandoned by everyone who used his wealth when it suited them."

I felt no satisfaction, no lingering bitterness—only a quiet sense of closure. Karma wasn't a malicious force; it was simply the natural mathematical equation of cause and effect. He had chosen deception, and the resulting isolation was the only logical outcome.
