Chapter 54 - Shadows in the Mirror

Julian Sterling sat in a dimly lit, smoke-heavy backroom of an upscale downtown lounge, far away from the flashing cameras of the paparazzi camped outside his confiscated mansion. Across the table sat Victor Vance—no relation to Elena's attorney, but a man far more dangerous: a high-priced fixer with ties to international offshore cartels and dirty political campaigns.
"I don't care how you do it, Victor, but I want her destroyed," Julian hissed, slamming an empty highball glass against the wooden table. "She took everything. My company, my reputation, my freedom. I want her penniless, ruined, and begging on her knees by the end of the month."
Victor calmly exhaled a thick ring of cigar smoke, his cold, reptilian eyes studying Julian with a mixture of contempt and amusement. "Mr. Sterling, let's get one thing straight. You aren't calling the shots anymore. Your assets are frozen, your accounts are monitored, and federal marshals are tracking your every move. The retainer you offered me? It bounced."
Julian’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "I have hidden assets! Untraceable portfolios in the Swiss Alps! Just help me liquidate them, and name your price!"
"Untraceable?" Victor chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. "Nothing is untraceable anymore, especially not since your brilliant wife handed the DOJ a master key to your entire financial architecture. Frankly, Julian, you're a liability. Helping you is suicide."
Desperation clawed at Julian’s throat. He leaned across the table, grabbing Victor by the lapels of his jacket. "Listen to me, you piece of trash! If I go down, I have enough dirt on half the politicians in this city to drag everyone down with me—including your primary benefactors!"
Victor slowly peeled Julian’s fingers away from his jacket, fixing him with a stare so icy it made Julian’s blood run cold. He pulled a small, encrypted burner phone from his pocket and slid it across the table.

"There is one way," Victor murmured softly. "A high-risk play. But if it fails, don't expect me to know your name."
Meanwhile, miles away across the city, Elena stood by her apartment window, staring at the blinking lights of the traffic below. A sudden, cold shiver ran down her spine. She couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that while they had won the first major battle, the true storm was only just beginning to brew on the horizon.
