Chapter 83 - Midnight at the Clock Tower

The old municipal clock tower stood like a monolithic sentinel against the dark, starless sky. Its massive gear systems groaned with every passing hour, a rhythmic ticking that echoed through the deserted cobblestone square. Elena stepped out of the sleek black sedan, her long wool coat billowing behind her in the crisp night air.

Marcus parked a few yards back, his hand resting on the dashboard, ready to move at a moment's notice. "Elena, this is textbook entrapment," he warned via the earpiece. "Let me go up there instead."

"No," Elena replied softly into her communicator. "This is personal. Whoever is pulling the strings wants me face-to-face. If I send you, they'll just vanish into the shadows again."

With quiet determination, Elena pushed open the heavy iron door of the clock tower. The interior smelled of aged wood, dust, and rust. Dust motes danced in the pale moonlight filtering through the cracked stained-glass windows. She began her ascent up the spiraling stone staircase, each footstep echoing hollowly in the vertical shaft.

When she reached the top bell chamber, the wind howled through the open arches. Standing by the edge, silhouetted against the glowing moon, was a tall figure cloaked in a dark trench coat.

May you like

"You came," the figure said, turning around slowly. The face revealed in the moonlight sent a jolt of pure disbelief straight through Elena's spine.

"It's impossible," Elena whispered, her fingers curling into tight fists. "You died in that fire."
