Chapter 58 - The Runway Showdown

The private airfield was pitch black, save for the runway lights guiding an idling twin-engine jet parked on the tarmac. The propellers spun in a fierce, deafening blur, whipping up a gale-force wind against the drizzle.

Julian Sterling sprinted across the wet tarmac, his expensive leather shoes slipping slightly on the slick concrete. He clutched a heavy leather briefcase tightly under his arm, his breath coming in ragged, panicked gasps. He had received an encrypted alert from Victor just ten minutes ago: The warehouse has been compromised. Run.

He reached the base of the portable aircraft stairs, panting heavily, and grabbed the metal handrail.

"Going somewhere, Julian?"

The cold, calm voice cut through the roar of the jet engines like a knife.

Julian froze. He slowly turned around to see a fleet of black SUVs screeching to a halt at the edge of the tarmac, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright, cutting through the misty rain. Federal agents poured out of the vehicles with weapons drawn.

Stepping out from the lead SUV, flanked by Agent Miller and Arthur Vance, was Elena.

She walked slowly across the tarmac, her trench coat billowing slightly in the wind, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute authority.

"Elena!" Julian snarled, his voice cracking with sheer hysteria as he abandoned the aircraft stairs and stumbled forward a few steps. "You ruined everything! You ungrateful, manipulative bitch! I made you! Everything you have is because of me!"

"No, Julian," Elena replied, her voice steady and echoing clearly across the open runway. "Everything I had was a cage. What I have now... I built myself."

Agent Miller stepped forward, clicking his handcuffs open. "Julian Sterling, you are under federal arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and the unlawful concealment of evidence related to a federal homicide investigation. You have the right to remain silent—though I strongly advise you not to, because anything you say will definitely be used against you."

Julian lunged forward in a desperate, pathetic attempt to bolt past the agents, but two tactical officers tackled him effortlessly to the wet pavement, pressing his face firmly against the tarmac as the cold steel cuffs snapped into place.

As they dragged him away toward the cruiser, Julian screamed obscenities into the rainy night sky, his voice fading into the roar of the idling jet engines.

Elena stood still on the tarmac, watching him go. She didn't feel triumph. She didn't feel hate. She only felt a profound, beautiful emptiness—the clean slate she had dreamed of for years.
