Chapter 55 - The Anonymous Package

A plain brown cardboard box sat on the concierge desk of Elena’s luxury apartment building. According to the log, it had been delivered by an independent courier service with no return address, paid entirely in cash.

Marcus, who had arrived early for their morning strategy session, placed the box on the kitchen island and stepped back, eyeing it with deep suspicion.

"Do you want me to call bomb disposal, or should we just open it with heavy-duty kitchen tongs?" Marcus joked nervously, though his eyes remained fixed on the taped seams.

"Don't be dramatic, Marcus. Julian isn't a terrorist; he's a narcissist," Elena said calmly, though her pulse spiked slightly. She picked up a sharp utility knife and carefully sliced through the packing tape.

Inside lay a heavy leather-bound ledger, old and dust-covered, accompanied by a single flash drive and a handwritten note scrawled in hurried, frantic cursive: ‘You think you know everything about the Sterling empire? Check page 42. He didn't just ruin companies, Elena. He buried people.’

Elena’s breath hitched. She opened the ledger to page 42. Pasted onto the aged yellow paper was a faded police report dated twelve years ago—long before she and Julian had ever met. It detailed the mysterious disappearance of Sarah Jenkins, a brilliant young financial analyst who had worked as Julian’s primary associate at his very first startup. The official ruling had been accidental drowning, her body never recovered. But the margin notes, written in Julian’s unmistakable handwriting, told a horrifyingly different story of corporate sabotage, hush money, and coercion.

"My god," Marcus whispered, reading over her shoulder. "Sarah Jenkins... I remember hearing about that case when I was in college. They said she embezzled funds and fled the country."

"She didn't flee," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly as the full horror of the man she had married began to take terrifying new dimensions. "He silenced her."

She plugged the flash drive into her laptop. A single video file popped up on the screen. She clicked play.

The video showed a grainy, dimly lit office security camera feed from over a decade ago. Julian and Sarah were arguing fiercely. Julian shoved her violently against a filing cabinet, his face twisted in pure rage, before the camera feed abruptly cut to black.

"We need to get this to Agent Miller immediately," Marcus urged, his face pale. "This isn't just white-collar fraud anymore, Elena. This is murder."
