Chapter 69 - A New Horizon
Later that evening, after the gala had wound down and the last guests had departed, Elena and Liam walked hand-in-hand along the promenade overlooking the sparkling New York harbor. The autumn breeze was crisp and cool, carrying the salty scent of the river and the distant hum of city traffic.
"So," Liam said, glancing over at her with a playful grin. "Does this mean the formidable Ms. Sterling is finally taking a permanent break from courtrooms and corporate crusades?"
"Not entirely," Elena admitted, leaning her head against his shoulder as they walked. "The foundation is expanding to three new cities next year. There are too many people who need help for me to ever truly step back."
"I figured as much," Liam chuckled softly. "Which is why I brought this."
He stopped walking, turning to face her under the soft golden glow of a nearby lamppost. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box.
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the box up into Liam’s warm, unwavering hazel eyes.
"Elena," Liam said softly, his voice steady and full of profound affection. "We met in paradise, but we built our connection right here in the messy, beautiful reality of life. You are the strongest, most resilient person I have ever known. And I don't want to just be your shelter in a storm... I want to be your home, wherever we are in the world."
He opened the box. Resting inside was a simple, breathtaking ring crafted from brushed platinum, featuring a small, raw diamond embedded in a band shaped like interwoven vines—symbolizing strength, resilience, and organic growth.
"Will you build the rest of your life with me?" Liam asked softly.
Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of pain or trauma. They were tears of pure, unadulterated joy.
