Chapter 7 - The Anonymous PackageTwo weeks after the gala, the crisp November air ushered in a flurry of early snow flurries across Chicago. Life at the firm had settled into a productive, fast-paced rhythm. I was knee-deep in quarterly audits when my executive assistant, Chloe, buzzed my desk intercom.

"Emily, there's a courier downstairs at the lobby reception," Chloe said. "He dropped off a heavy package addressed specifically to you. Marked 'Personal and Confidential.' Security cleared it through the X-ray scanner, but there's no return address."
Frowning, I told her to send it up. A few minutes later, a flat, square cardboard box wrapped in brown shipping paper sat on my pristine glass desk.
With a letter opener, I sliced through the reinforced packing tape. Inside lay a heavy, leather-bound journal with gold-embossed lettering that had faded with age. Beneath it was a neatly folded handwritten note on expensive stationery, along with a stack of bank statements from an offshore account.
I unfolded the note first. My eyes scanned the familiar, elegant cursive handwriting. It was Margaret.
“Dearest Emily,” the letter began.
“If you are reading this, it means Daniel’s reckless financial incompetence has finally caught up with him in ways even I hadn't fully anticipated. When we divorced his father’s old business partner years ago, I learned to keep track of every shadow. Enclosed are documents proving that Daniel didn't just embezzle joint funds for Vanessa’s boutique lifestyle; he took out unauthorized high-interest personal loans using our old suburban family estate as secondary collateral without Robert or me knowing. He is sinking, Emily. He tried to come to us yesterday begging for bail money, and Robert had him physically escorted off the property. Do with these papers what you will. You have my full blessing to protect yourself.”
I sat back in my leather ergonomic chair, staring out the floor-to-ceiling window at the gray, churning waters of the lake below. Margaret hadn't just cut Daniel off; she had handed me the final, legal key to completely dismantle any remaining legal loopholes he might try to exploit in future asset claims.
More importantly, it showed a profound alignment of values. Margaret was a woman of absolute honor. She loved her son, but she despised dishonesty and cowardice far more.
I picked up the phone and dialed Margaret's private number. It rang twice before she answered.
"Hello, Emily," Margaret’s calm, composed voice greeted me.
"I received the package, Margaret," I said softly. "Thank you. Are you alright? I know how painful it must be to watch your own son self-destruct like this."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. When Margaret spoke, her voice was steady, though laced with a quiet sorrow. "Painful? Yes, at first, Emily. But motherhood isn't about enabling a grown man to become a parasite. Daniel made his bed. Now, he gets to lie in it. You focus on your career, your peace, and your future. Let the legal system do its work."
"I will," I replied, feeling a deep sense of closure settle over my chest. The chapter of my life involving Daniel was truly closed, locked, and buried beneath a mountain of indisputable facts.
