Chapter 63 - A Breath of Fresh Air

Liam turned out to be a marine conservationist and freelance wildlife photographer who spent half the year documenting coral reef restoration projects around the Caribbean and the other half teaching underwater photography to marine biology students.
Over the next week, Elena found herself drawn into Liam’s unpretentious, vibrant world. Unlike the rigid, status-obsessed men of New York high society who viewed relationships as strategic business mergers, Liam was deeply grounded, endlessly curious, and fiercely passionate about the natural world.
They spent their days snorkeling through vibrant coral gardens teeming with neon-colored fish, and their evenings sitting around driftwood bonfires on secluded beaches, talking about everything and nothing under a blanket of brilliant stars.
One evening, as they roasted marshmallows over crackling embers, Liam looked over at Elena, the firelight dancing in his hazel eyes.
"You have this habit," Liam observed gently, tossing a small pebble into the sand.
"What habit?" Elena asked, leaning back against a weathered log.
"Whenever you look out at the ocean or the mountains, your shoulders drop, but your eyes stay alert—like you're waiting for a sudden storm to break, even when the sky is completely clear." Liam looked at her with profound empathy. "You carry a lot of armor, Elena. You don't have to wear it here."
Elena fell silent. For a long moment, the only sound was the crackle of the fire and the steady whisper of the waves. She had never told Liam her full story; she had simply introduced herself as Elena, taking a much-needed sabbatical from the city. Yet, somehow, without knowing the tabloids or the court cases, he could read the invisible scars she carried beneath the surface.
"I used to live in a place where storms were manufactured inside boardroom meetings by people I trusted," Elena admitted softly, staring into the flames. "It takes a while for your nervous system to realize that the thunder you hear is just distant weather, not incoming artillery."

Liam reached across the space between them, resting his warm hand gently over hers. "Well, for what it's worth... you're safe here. And if a storm ever does roll in, I'm pretty good at building shelters."
Elena looked down at his hand resting on hers, feeling a quiet, unfamiliar warmth bloom in her chest. For the first time in years, the heavy walls around her heart didn't feel like a fortress keeping enemies out, but a door she was finally willing to leave unlocked.
