Chapter 59 - The Media Storm and the Rising Star

Within forty-eight hours, the arrest at the airfield became the top national news story. Cable news networks ran non-stop specials breaking down the downfall of the Sterling empire. Social media was flooded with hashtags like #JusticeForSarah and #QueenElena, turning her into an accidental cultural icon.
Yet, amidst the roaring hurricane of public attention, Elena retreated to the quietest place she knew: her grandmother's old wooden cabin nestled deep in the mountains upstate.
Sitting on the wide front porch wrapped in a thick wool blanket, she watched the morning mist roll over the evergreen trees, sipping black coffee from a chipped ceramic mug. The contrast between this serene wilderness and the cutthroat corporate concrete jungle she had escaped felt surreal.
Her phone, left deliberately on the indoor wooden table, vibrated incessantly with interview requests from Oprah, 60 Minutes, and every major publishing house wanting her tell-all memoir.
Maya stepped out onto the porch holding a tray of warm blueberry scones. "You're trending worldwide again, you know. Twitter has officially declared you a patron saint of revenge."
Elena laughed softly, taking a scone. "I don't want to be a saint, Maya. And I certainly don't want revenge anymore. Revenge is just another chain keeping you tied to the person who hurt you. I want peace."
"Well, peace is going to have to wait for at least one meeting," Maya smiled mischievously. "Arthur is driving up from the city. He says the civil settlement negotiations with Sterling Global's remaining board members are wrapped up. You just won absolute ownership of the primary commercial real estate holdings, plus a multi-million-dollar restitution settlement."
"That was faster than expected," Elena mused.
"When opposing counsel realizes their primary benefactor is facing multiple life sentences without parole, they tend to fold like cheap lawn chairs," Maya noted cheerfully. "What are you going to do with the real estate empire?"

Elena looked out over the endless green canopy of the mountains, a brilliant, purposeful light sparking in her eyes. "I’m going to turn the downtown headquarters building into a foundation—a massive, fully funded resource center and safe haven for victims of corporate abuse, domestic coercion, and financial entrapment."
Maya stared at her best friend, her eyes welling with proud tears. "Sarah would have loved that."
