Chapter 56 - The Trap is Set

Agent Miller stared at the video file on his laptop screen in the federal field office, his expression grim. He looked up at Elena and Marcus, who sat across from him in tense silence.

"Where did you say you got this?" Miller asked, leaning forward.

"An anonymous delivery to my apartment this morning," Elena replied. "There was no return address, but whoever sent it clearly wants Julian brought down for good. Could it be an inside job from one of his former associates?"

"Or it could be a trap," Miller countered thoughtfully. "An anonymous tip dropped directly into law enforcement's lap can sometimes be dismissed in court if the defense argues chain-of-custody issues or tampering. However, the forensic data on this flash drive... it’s authentic. The timestamp metadata hasn't been altered."

Miller leaned back in his chair, tapping a pen against his desk. "If we execute a search warrant on Julian’s old storage facility—the one registered under his defunct shell company from twelve years ago—we might find physical evidence or bank records tying him directly to Sarah Jenkins' disappearance. But we only get one shot at this. If Julian gets wind of the warrant before we hit the unit, he’ll have everything incinerated within the hour."

"Then we make sure he doesn't get wind of it," a familiar voice echoed from the doorway.

Arthur Vance stepped into the office, holding a stack of legal documents. "I just filed an emergency motion for asset forfeiture expansion based on new felony disclosures. While Julian's defense attorneys are scrambling in civil court to keep him from being completely broke, his attention will be entirely diverted away from federal criminal investigations."

Elena nodded slowly, her mind racing. "We use his arrogance against him. Julian can't stand public humiliation. If we leak a false story to the financial press suggesting that the SEC is closing its investigation due to lack of evidence, he’ll let his guard down."

"A classic disinformation campaign," Miller smiled approvingly. "I like the way you think, Mrs. Sterling. Or should I say... Ms. Vance?"

"Not yet, Agent Miller," Elena replied with a sharp, confident smirk. "Soon."

By late afternoon, the financial blogs picked up the carefully planted rumor: SEC Probe Stalls: Sterling Legal Team Confident of Dismissal. Within an hour, Julian’s public relations team was spinning victory narratives across social media, believing they had weathered the worst of the storm. They had no idea the federal net was tightening around them with inescapable precision.
