Chapter 60 - The Trial of the Century

Three months later, the courtroom of the Federal District Court was packed to absolute capacity. Media crews lined the hallways, and spectators wrapped around the block, all eager to witness the trial of Julian Sterling.

Julian sat at the defense table, looking a shadow of his former self. His hair was streaked with gray, his tailored suits replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit, his posture completely broken. His expensive defense attorneys whispered urgently in his ear, but Julian stared blankly ahead at the prosecution table, where Elena sat beside Arthur Vance.

She didn't look at Julian with hatred or malice. Her gaze was calm, composed, and utterly indifferent. To Julian, that indifference was far more agonizing than any screaming match or bitter insult could ever be.

The federal prosecutor stepped up to the podium, laying out an airtight case complete with financial forensic trails, secret audio recordings, and the recovered physical evidence from the storage facility linking Julian directly to the decades-old cover-up of Sarah Jenkins' disappearance.

When it was Elena’s turn to take the witness stand, the courtroom fell into a pin-drop silence. Every camera lens pivoted toward her.

She walked with measured grace, placed her hand on the Bible, and took her seat.

"Mrs. Sterling," the prosecutor began gently. "In your own words, describe your experience living under the control of the defendant."

Elena took a deep, steady breath. She looked out across the courtroom—not just at the judges and jurors, but past them, imagining all the women watching the broadcast from their living rooms, trapped in golden cages of their own.

"For years, I believed that love meant enduring control, that loyalty meant silence, and that survival meant losing yourself piece by piece to satisfy someone else's bottomless greed," Elena said, her voice clear, resonant, and unwavering. "Julian Sterling built an empire on the illusion that he was untouchable. But he forgot a fundamental truth: you can lie to the board, you can bribe the auditors, and you can hide documents in the dark—but truth has a way of rising to the surface, no matter how heavy the stones you use to weigh it down."

She paused, locking eyes with Julian for one final, lingering second. Julian flinched, looking away unable to sustain her gaze.

"He thought he owned me," Elena concluded softly. "Instead, he accidentally taught me how to be unbreakable."

When the jury returned after just three hours of deliberation, the verdict echoed through the silent courtroom like a thunderclap: Guilty on all forty-two counts.
