Chapter 64 - The Unexpected Visitor

Two weeks of tropical paradise passed in what felt like a single golden afternoon. But reality, like an uninvited guest, eventually knocked on the door.
Back at the bungalow, Elena found Maya holding her laptop with a deeply troubled expression.
"What's wrong?" Elena asked, setting down her beach bag.
"Arthur just emailed and called," Maya said, her voice tight with concern. "Julian’s defense team filed an unexpected appeal on a technicality regarding the admissibility of the secondary financial server logs. A sympathetic appellate judge granted a temporary procedural review hearing."
Elena’s blood ran cold. The fleeting tranquility of the island shattered instantly, replaced by the familiar, sharp spike of adrenaline. "A procedural review? On what grounds?"
"They’re claiming the forensic extraction warrant executed at the storage facility exceeded jurisdictional boundaries by twenty feet," Maya explained, reading from her notes. "It’s a desperate, technical loophole, but in federal appeals, desperate loopholes sometimes get entertained if the defense throws enough money at corrupt appellate attorneys."
Elena stared out the window toward the sun-drenched beach where Liam was currently organizing his camera gear by the docks. The contrast between her peaceful island life and the dark, relentless shadow of her past was jarring.
"I have to go back," Elena said firmly, her jaw tightening with resolute determination. "I can't let him slip through a legal technicality. If Julian thinks he can claw his way back out of the hole I put him in, he’s sorely mistaken."
Maya sighed, walking over and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I knew this vacation was too good to last. Do you want me to book the next flight back to New York?"
"First class, two tickets," Elena nodded, her eyes flashing with steel. "Let's go remind Julian why he should have stayed quiet."
Later that evening, Elena sat with Liam on the wooden deck of the bungalow under the pale moonlight. She told him everything—the marriage, the abuse, the corporate fraud, the trial, and the sudden appeal threatening to undo everything she had fought for. She left nothing out.

When she finished, expecting him to look overwhelmed or eager to distance himself from her chaotic, high-stakes baggage, Liam simply reached out, pulled her gently into his arms, and kissed the top of her head.
"Whenever you have to leave to fight your dragons, I'll be right here waiting when you get back," Liam whispered softly. "And if you need someone to hold the shield... just say the word."
