Chapter 18 - The Autumn PreludeBy October, the Chicago landscape transformed into a breathtaking tapestry of amber, gold, and crimson leaves. The crisp autumn air heralded the final countdown to our wedding, set for early November at a historic estate overlooking Lake Michigan.

With Sarah handling the final legal details and Margaret coordinating the wedding rehearsal schedule with military precision, my bridal preparations were entirely stress-free. There were no hidden secrets, no frantic late-night text messages, and no creeping doubts.

One evening in mid-October, while reviewing seating charts in my high-rise condo, Julian walked in carrying two takeout bags from our favorite Italian bistro and a bottle of rich Barolo wine.

"Working hard or hardly working, future Mrs. Vance?" Julian teased, setting the food down on the kitchen island.

"Just finalizing the guest list," I laughed, tossing my pen aside and walking into his open arms. "Though I have to admit, wedding planning is infinitely easier when everyone on the guest list actually supports your happiness."

Julian pulled me close, his hazel eyes filled with deep, unwavering devotion. "Only people of integrity allowed at our wedding. Anyone else doesn't even make the mailing list."

We sat on the balcony wrapped in cozy cashmere blankets, sipping wine as the chilly autumn breeze whispered off the lake. I looked up at the glittering city skyline, marveling at how drastically my world had changed in just two short years. The storm had come, tested every beam and pillar of my existence, and swept away the rot. What remained was solid, beautiful, and eternal.
